Martha Davis – Podcast

December 12, 2016 by trevor@sounddistractions.com 2 Comments

In 1979 I remember listening to the radio and being stopped in my tracks as one of the sultriest, sexiest and arresting songs I’d ever heard hit the airwaves. Now being in my mid teens and suddenly having an interest in the opposite sex may have had something to do with it, BUT – almost 40 years later I still think it’s one of the sexiest songs ever committed to vinyl. The question is, will I be able to maintain total control when I meet the voice behind it?

The Motels first formed in LA in the 1970’s with Martha Davis on vocals. The band struggled for a number of years until they finally broke through with Total Control in 1980. The Motels became part of America’s New Wave forefront throughout the 80’s, racking up a string of hits with Only The Lonely, Take The L (Out Of Lover) and Suddenly Last Summer before breaking up towards the end of the decade.

As a solo artist Martha Davis released the Policy album in 1987 and enjoyed further success with the single Don’t Tell Me The Time. Martha has since reformed The Motels recording new material while continuing to tour with new fans discovering the band’s music.

Behind the facade of pop stardom there is a much darker side to Martha Davis’ life. A dysfunctional family upbringing led to her teenage pregnancy and then a horrific life as a young mum who dreamt of becoming an artist while stuck in a dead end relationship.

Martha’s story is one of struggle, survival and ultimately success, before the excesses of life as a rock and roll band eventually brought the Motels undone.

Martha Davis and the Motels will return to Australia early in 2017. This podcast is more than just a timely reminder of The Motels’ musical heritage – it’s a compelling story, one that paints a very honest picture, warts and all.
