Elli Schoen – Mumma

October 14, 2016 by trevor@sounddistractions.com Leave a Comment

Ellie Schoen

As soon as I heard Elli Schoen’s Mumma I was entranced. The song is underpinned by a beautiful ethereal guitar sound with Elli’s powerfully emotive vocal a counterpoint to that sound. The song moves between that gentle guitar rhythm and a more punching arrangement of guitars and drums that creates a stunning immediacy. It’s the kind of juxtaposition between light and shade / slow and fast / loud and soft that musicians like Jimmy Page understood so implicitly in creating a dramatic impact in their music.

The drama isn’t contained exclusively to the music either. Mumma was written after a particularly dramatic episode unfolded in Elli’s world as she explains:

“I wrote the song because my friend’s mum passed away, and it made me realise just how much of a huge part my mum plays in my life and growth as a person.”

How much of the credit for the striking sound of the song should go to producer Joel Quartermain (Eskimo Joe) I can’t be sure, but what is clear is that this talented young songwriter and performer from Western Australia is definitely one to watch. Elli Schoen’s new EP is due to be released early in 2017.
