Abbe May first emerged out of Western Australia through a number of Perth based bands like The Fuzz and Abbe May and the Rockin’ Pneumonia, but since 2010 has performed under her own name. You only need to look at her solo album titles Design Desire, Kiss My Apocalypse and the forthcoming Bitchcraft (due later this year) to know that this woman is no shrinking violet. As a songwriter and as a live performer May has forged a reputation as a strong, intelligent, opinionated and sexually charged woman – a very potent combination that has won her many fans and wide respect amongst fellow musicians and music writers.
Abbe May’s latest track Doomsday Clock reflects the concerns of an artist who refuses to stay silent in a politically conservative and oppressive environment. Written following a nervous breakdown, May explained her rationale for writing the song:
“My lifeline really was the great love I feel for my infant niece and nephews. It really made me see beyond myself, that I needed to do something more meaningful than pursue this whole sex, drugs and rock and roll thing. I want them to have a good future here on earth. I want to try at least to help guide them through a better world than the one I currently see being willfully destroyed through greed, manipulation and stupidity.”
Abbe May recently wrapped up touring with Peter Garrett as a guitarist with his support band the Alter Egos and will head out on her own tour later this year to promote her new album. You’ll find more details here.
